A healthy and active lifestyle can help prevent falls
Kingston – Most falls are predictable and preventable. KFL&A Public Health suggests that a healthy, active lifestyle that includes regular physical activity, such as walking, will reduce the risk of falls and result in other health benefits, such as stronger muscles and bones, improved balance, a healthier heart and lungs, and a reduced risk of chronic disease.
In 2010, falls cost Canadians more than any other type of injury, with the total economic burden estimated at $8.7 billion. As the population continues to age, this number is predicted to increase substantially. Adults over the age of 65 experience more falls than any other age group, and have the highest rate of emergency department visits and hospitalizations due to falls.
November is Fall Prevention Month, and in recognition, KFL&A Public Health’s Walk On program and Fall Prevention Ambassador (FPA) program will be collaborating at two events this month to raise awareness on staying active to prevent and reduce the incidence of falls in our community. Two events will be held this month for the KFL&A community where participants will have an opportunity to talk to Fall Prevention Ambassadors during their usual Walk On session.
Fall Prevention Ambassadors will be at the following Walk-On sessions this month:
- November 20, 9:00 a.m. at the INVISTA Centre
- November 22, 9:00 a.m. at the Memorial Centre
