Acute Care Enhanced Surveillance (ACES) Pandemic Tracker Launches
Kingston, ON – KFL&A Public Health launches new Acute Care Enhanced Surveillance (ACES) Pandemic Tracker to monitor daily admissions to hospitals in Ontario for key syndromes related to COVID-19.
ACES is a real-time syndromic surveillance system that uses natural language processing to group free text reasons for admission into different syndromes. These syndromes are not clinical diagnoses. The ACES Pandemic Tracker looks at admissions to hospitals for syndromes related to COVID-19, for example, pneumonia. It also includes admissions that have been flagged as COVID-19 based on the free text.
“The purpose of this tool is to provide situational awareness based on participating acute care hospitals in Ontario,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, Medical Officer of Health at KFL&A Public Health. “It does not provide specific information about the rates of COVID-19 in the province.”
The Tracker compares current admissions for COVID-19 related syndromes to historical data to see when there are more admissions to hospital than expected. When reviewing the graph, when the black line (which represents the current admissions) starts going above the yellow or maroon dotted lines (which represent historical data), this will suggest that our hospitals are seeing more admissions. This is also true if areas on the map, the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), are yellow or maroon. Specifically, yellow shows a possible increase in admissions while maroon shows a significant increase. The graph shows data across the province which you can filter to see one LHIN.
As the provincial situation evolves, so will the Tracker. The Tracker will be regularly reviewed and updated based on current best evidence.
