Celebrating KFL&A Public Health’s Volunteers
Kingston – Over the past year, KFL&A Public Health has been overwhelmed by the response of our community wanting to help and volunteer in whatever capacity they can to keep everyone healthy and safe during the pandemic. We are so grateful for this incredible response from our community and in celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 18 to 24, 2021, we want to express a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers at KFL&A Public Health for their commitment and support.
“The successes that we have achieved as an agency are in large part due to the exceptional volunteers we have and the numerous hours each of them has contributed,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, Medical Officer of Health at KFL&A Public Health. “We have been fortunate to have so many volunteers join our team to help us meet our commitment to protect the public’s health. In total, we now have over 175 volunteers at KFL&A Public Health supporting COVID-19 units.”
While many of our volunteer programs ‘paused’ during the pandemic, some of these volunteers transitioned to support COVID-19 units and many more were recruited to fill new positions in these units. We now have volunteers fulfilling various roles in COVID-19 units, including positions at the mass immunization clinics and rural remote mobile clinics, on the contact tracing and case management team, and in administrative capacity to assist with booking client vaccine appointments. We are also very fortunate to have partnered with the Kingston Rotary clubs who have committed two volunteers seven days a week to help at the mass immunization clinic at INVISTA Centre. As vaccine supply continues to increase, we will most likely continue to actively recruit volunteers from our long wait list!
The theme for this year’s national volunteer week is ‘The Value of One, The Power of Many’. This theme truly reflects the individual and collective efforts, we have seen during the pandemic, and it sets the tone for re-imagining the next 20 years as the value of one act and the power of many enables us to thrive together.
We would also like to send special thanks to all our staff who have provided training, support, and encouragement to volunteers. Staff play a vital role to ensure that volunteers are confident, knowledgeable, and comfortable in meeting the demands of their new position.
Our collective success is certainly enhanced through the services volunteers provide, the people they reach, and the differences they make. Thank you, KFL&A Public Health volunteers!
