Cold weather health alert issued for KFL&A area
Kingston—With Environment Canada’s forecast calling for temperatures to drop below -15°C tonight through Saturday night, KFL&A Public Health is issuing a Cold Weather Health Alert for the KFL&A area.
At -15°C, hypothermia becomes an increasing concern and when the wind chill reaches –35 or colder, exposed skin can freeze in as little as 10 minutes.
Very cold weather brings an increased risk of hypothermia for people who stay outside for long periods of time without adequate protection. Overexposure to cold temperatures can result in severe injury. People at greatest risk from cold injuries include infants, the elderly, homeless, outdoor workers, recreation enthusiasts and people who consume excess alcohol.
