Dr. Kieran Moore appointed Medical Officer of Health for KFL&A Public Health
Kingston, March 2, 2017 - The KFL&A Board of Health has appointed Dr. Kieran Moore as the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) effective July 1, 2017. Dr. Moore has been the Associate Medical Officer of Health (AMOH) at KFL&A Public Health since 2011, while also holding the roles of: Program Director, Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program, Queen’s University; Professor, Department of Emergency and Family Medicine, Queen’s University; and attending physician at Kingston General Hospital (KGH) and Hotel Dieu Hospital (HDH). Dr. Moore received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Public Health from Queen’s University. He has fellowships in both Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the College of Family Physicians, together with numerous other professional qualifications.
Dr. Moore's main area of interest has been the real-time evaluation of health data for public health and health system purposes. The Acute Care Enhanced Surveillance (ACES) System, Public Health Information Management System (PHIMS), and most recently the South-Eastern Health Integrated Information Portal (SHiiP), all developed at KFL&A Public Health by the Knowledge Management Team, have received provincial, national, and international acclaim. Notably, PHIMS was used as a real-time environmental monitoring system for the 2015 Pan American Games held in Toronto, Ontario.
“The Board of Health is extremely pleased that Dr. Moore has accepted the Medical Officer of Health position for the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington region,” said Mayor Denis Doyle, Chair of the Board of Health at KFL&A Public Health. “As the Associate Medical Officer of Health over the past five years, the Board of Health has always been impressed with Dr. Moore’s dedication, his evidence-based approach, and fiscally responsible way of solving whatever issue we are faced with. Dr. Moore continually looks for better ways to deliver public health programs to encourage the best possible health of our citizens. We look forward to his continued commitment to our community’s health.”
Dr. Moore succeeds Dr. Ian Gemmill, who has been Medical Officer of Health since 1997. Dr. Gemmill is retiring on June 30, 2017, after more than 20 years of service with KFL&A Public Health, and more than 35 years in Ontario’s public health system. The Board of Health acknowledges that under his leadership, the agency has grown substantially, a new main office was built in 2003, programs and services expanded, strategic partnerships across the health system have been established, and numerous emergencies have been responded to, most notably the influenza pandemic in 2009. In retirement, Dr. Gemmill will pursue personal interests, and will continue to contribute to projects in public health both nationally and internationally.
