KFL&A Board of Health Support Canada – United States Border Closure
Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) Board of Health issued a letter of support for the request to keep the border between Canada and the United States (US) closed to non-essential travellers until the COVID-19 pandemic is better controlled in the United States.
“This letter of support was initiated in response to The Premier of Ontario’s request to keep the border between Canada and the US to essential travellers only and urge Prime Minister Trudeau to keep the cross-border closed to non-essential travellers,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, Medical Officer of Health at KFL&A Public Health. “Re-opening the border too soon will almost certainly increase the risk of COVID-19 cases in Canada, particularly given the previous rates of tourism between the two countries.”
Currently, non-essential travel across the border is not permitted, and all Canadians returning to Canada must undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine as per the Quarantine Act. The present Order by the Government of Canada to keep the borders between Canada-US closed is effective until July 31. However, the Canada - US border remains open for essential travel services such as transport of essential goods.
While there are many economic and social advantages of re-opening the border, the KFL&A Board of Health will continue to support The Premier of Ontario and the Prime Minister of Canada to keep the border closed as it may be a danger to Canadians given the poorly controlled COVID-19 situation in the US.
