KINGSTON – On Thursday, August 31, 2017, KFL&A Public Health, in partnership with Street Health Centre (a part of Kingston Community Health Centres), Frontenac OPP and members of the KFL&A Community Drug Strategy Advisory Group is hosting two events to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. Each event will include a press conference, a question and answer period, free naloxone kit distribution, training on how to use a naloxone kit, as well as an opportunity to remember a loved one who has died or have passed away or experienced permanent injury as a result of drug overdose.
Both media and members of the public are invited to attend both events and participate in recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day:
Kingston – Street Health Centre, a part of Kingston Community Health Centres, 115 Barrack Street, Kingston
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. – Press conference, including a question and answer period
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. – Naloxone kit distribution, naloxone training, opportunities to remember a loved one, and tours of Street Health Centre
Sharbot Lake – Petro-Canada, intersection of Highway 38 and Highway 7
2:30 to 3:30 p.m. – Press conference, including question and answer period
2:00 to 4:00 p.m. – Naloxone kit distribution, naloxone training, and opportunities to remember a loved one
The goals of this day in the KFL&A region are to raise awareness of overdose including risks, prevention, recognition and response, reduce the stigma of substance use, addiction and drug-related death, and raise awareness of the collaborative community response in KFL&A. Different coloured balloons will be displayed at each event location to honour lives lost to overdose and to represent some of the lives that have been saved from use of naloxone.
