KFL&A Public Health Releases the Cost of Eating Healthy Report
Kingston – Everyone needs access to healthful, nutritious, and affordable food. Every year, KFL&A Public Health surveys grocery stores within the Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) area, using the Nutritious Food Basket survey to determine the cost of a healthy food basket for both individuals and families.
Results of the 2016 Cost of Eating Healthy Report
Based on results from the 2016 Nutritious Food Basket survey, the cost of eating healthily per month for a family household of four (two adults, two children), is approximately $902.00. This amount is an increase of $21.00 over the cost for an equivalent basket in 2015. It is becoming even more difficult for families on fixed or low incomes to have access to the nutritious food that we all need to thrive.
Supporting access to healthy food
Community organizations, stakeholders and the public use the results of the survey for educational purposes, program planning and informing policy decisions that will support access to healthy, safe, and affordable food. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care monitors the nutritious food basket costs over time, looking at the provincial average cost of the basket annually.
KFL&A Public Health supports healthy food access for everyone within our communities by engaging in initiatives and partnerships such as: Food for You, Food for Two, Food Policy Council for KFL&A, Food Sharing Project, Good Food Box Kingston, and the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program.
