KFL&A Public Health Releases the Cost of Eating Healthy Report
Kingston - KFL&A Public Health has released the 2018 Cost of Eating Healthy Report. Based on the local results of the Nutritious Food Basket annual survey, the cost to eat healthy in 2018 for a family of four (two adults, two children), is approximately $874 per month. Although a decrease of $14 from the 2017 report, the results strongly demonstrate how vulnerable populations with a fixed or low income have difficulty affording healthy food after accounting for rent and other basic expenses.
Currently, 10% of households in the KFL&A area live with food insecurity, meaning that they can’t afford to buy the food they want and need for good health. Food insecure households have little money left to buy food after paying their basic expenses, or they might skip meals so that there is enough food for their children.
KFL&A Public Health is committed to developing, implementing, and supporting programs and services that address health disparities, such as food insecurity.
