[News]: Local Young Adult Quits Tobacco and Wins a wouldurather… Contest Grand Prize
KINGSTON – KFL&A Public Health, in partnership with the provincial organization, Leave the Pack Behind, hosted the annual wouldurather… contest for young adults in the KFL&A region. The contest aimed to motivate young adults to quit tobacco for good, to cut back on their smoking, to party without the smoke, or to stay tobacco-free for a chance to win up to $5,000 in cash. The six-week contest has come to an end and a grand prize winner has been selected!
Congratulations to Sandra Evoy, for winning the grand prize for the “Don’t Start and Win, Winner” category and staying tobacco-free!
“The reason I decided to stay smoke-free is my two young children and what motivates me is knowing that it is my responsibility to be a positive role model in their lives,” said Sandra Evoy. “When it comes to making healthy choices, I need to show them how important it is to stay smoke-free.”
The wouldurather… contest continues to be an important strategy to help to tackle the high rates of smoking and tobacco use among young adults 18 to 29 years old. It is effective in helping people who smoke to quit. Research indicates that up to 20% of young adults who participate in wouldurather… will quit smoking. Without the motivation and support of the contest, about only 5% would do so.
Leave the Pack Behind is an age-tailored tobacco control initiative offered year-round in Ontario. Funded by the Government of Ontario with generous prize support provided by the makers of Thrive and Habitrol, the wouldurather… contest aims to motivate and to encourage young adult Ontarians to live tobacco-free lives.
