[News]: Newborns at the Ontario Early Years Centre to receive books, thanks to a private donor
KINGSTON – Thanks to a generous community well wisher, who has a lifelong love of reading, newborns attending the new Ontario Early Years Centre at Holy Name School will receive a free, quality children’s book.
As a member of the KFL&A Children’s Literacy Committee, KFL&A Public Health participates in the Let’s Read Project. This project helps to put books into the hands of new parents and newborns to increase the child’s chances of developing a love of reading and becoming an enthusiastic reader. Early exposure to reading, songs, and rhymes is instrumental in developing a child’s language and early literacy skills.
According to the research from ABC Life Literacy Canada, the percentage of Canadians with literacy and numeracy levels below the desired level is staggering: 49% for literacy and 55% for numeracy. “If we want to improve literacy levels, we need to intervene early in the lives of young children to ensure that parents are supported in reading to their children and that they have access to books of good quality,” said Joanne Morrissey, Parent Support Worker at KFL&A Public Health.
Media are invited to attend a celebration to acknowledge the generous donation:
