One challenge at a time: Kingston to skip 2020 Commuter Challenge due to COVID-19
The committee that coordinates Commuter Challenge in Kingston has made the difficult, but necessary, decision to cancel the event this year, due to COVID-19.
“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce we are unable to proceed with the event in 2020. At this time, our efforts and resources are focused on flattening the curve and supporting our community during this pandemic,” said Peter Bearse, Registered Nurse with KFL&A Public Health, the agency that leads Commuter Challenge locally.
Each year, Kingston joins communities across the country to participate in Commuter Challenge, a week-long event meant to inspire people to adopt more environmentally and health–conscious modes of travel. Last year, Kingston had the highest percentage of participants in the country, and second highest number of participants in total—second only to Winnipeg, Man.
“In 2019, Kingston showed the rest of Canada what we can achieve when we work towards a common goal. Right now, we need to follow the advice of our local public health agency and focus on practicing physical distancing. But next year, we’ll be back—and in it to win it,” says Mayor Bryan Paterson
