Sleep for school aged children
Sleep is very important for your child’s physical and mental well-being. Not getting enough sleep can have an impact on your child’s mood and function at school. For teenagers, they are more likely to be involved in car crashes and other incidences as reaction times are affected.
According to the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines children 5 to 13 years of age need between 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night and teenagers 14 to17 years of age need 8 to10 hours of sleep each night.
Teenagers need more sleep because their bodies and minds are growing quickly. Teens catch up on their sleep on the weekends so let them sleep longer, when possible, but encourage them to get up before noon so that they are able to get to sleep at night.
